Trained as an architect in the studios of Frank Lloyd Wright and the New Bauhaus in Chicago, Smith turned to painting and drawing from the mid-1940s through the 1950s. In 1961, he began to develop studio prototypes of the strict but often complex geometric structures that became the basis of his renowned monumental sculpture."
