Exposition NowHere
15 mai 1996 - 08 septembre 1996
Danemark, Humlebaeck, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
http://www.louisiana.dk/nowhere/now.html
"An international "state of the art" exhibition. NowHere will be a large-scale presentation of contemporary international art. The intention is to throw light both on the most significant currents in today's art and new ways of presenting contemporary art within the museum institution."
Notes : "What is contemporary art? With every year this question becomes increasingly difficult to answer.
It is quite obvious that we have to give up the notion that it is possible to identify dominant trends, new "-isms", in order to describe and categorize what is happening in contemporary art. Time, space, and culture have become constantly changing concepts in the wake of the explosion of information, media and immigration. And parallel to that, art - the primary seismograph and interpreter of contemporary life - has also become impossible to define by means of one or a small number of categories. Thus, we have no "-isms", not even any "stars" as in the 80s, which can help us navigate in this new terrain vague. What we do have are artists who find new ways of working in this open field.
What is contemporary art? Although the question may be impossible to answer, it is possible to show what it is. The Louisiana Museum's exhibition NowHere is a radical response to a radically changed situation. NowHere is a polyphonic exhibition in which five distinctly different views on contemporary art are assembled under the same roof. The exhibition combines works by many of the most creative contemporary artists and new ways of dealing with the exhibition medium, with the history of art and with the museum institution.
Four well-known curators, Ute Meta Bauer from Germany, Iwona Blazwick from Britain, Laura Cottingham from the USA, and Bruce Ferguson from Canada, together with curators Anneli Fuchs and Lars Grambye from Louisiana have been asked to try to find new ways of exhibiting art which no longer fits the given molds.
NowHere is an innovative and a daring project - and an ambitious project as well. Nearly the whole museum of 10,000 square metres will be emptied to make space for the exhibition. A two-volume catalogue of the exhibition will be published in a Danish as well as an English version. Furthermore, a series of events such as film and video festivals, performances, concerts, panel discussions etc. have been planned for the exhibition period.
