The Graphische Sammlung Albertina in Vienna, which holds one of the world's most acclaimed collections of works on paper, and the Guggenheim Museum have come together to present the finest examples of draftsmanship by some of the most accomplished artists of the last five centuries. The exhibition demonstrates the scope of the medium as a means for observation and experimentation, the creation of fiction, the representation of history and intimate family records, and the exploration of the symbolic and everyday life.
Notes : [ The artists represented by the Albertina include celebrated painter, draftsman, and printmaker Albrecht Dürer, Renaissance virtuoso Raphael, Baroque masters Federico Barocci and Peter Paul Rubens, 17th-century master Rembrandt, landscape artist Claude Lorrain, and Rococo painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard, whose drawings in the exhibition have rarely before been shown publicly. From the 19th century, the Albertina offers Rudolf von Alt, Adolph Menzel, and Hans von Marée. Their 20th-century contribution includes Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka. The Guggenheim's contribution includes 19th-century Post-Impressionist Georges Seurat and 19th- and 20th-century work by Picasso, as well as seminal by explorers of abstraction Vasily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, Joseph Beuys, who revolutionized postwar art, and, later in the century, Robert Rauschenberg, Jim Dine, and Francesco Clemente.
