Notes : [ The opening exhibition, The Guggenheim Museums and the Art of This Century, highlights the newly created permanent collection of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Shown in concert with works from the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in New York and Venice, the exhibition touches on the notion of the museum collection as an encyclopedia of masterpieces of 20th-century European and American art. The exhibition features concentrations of works by select artists, as well as site-specific commissions and installations by several leading contemporary artists. The inaugural exhibition surveys the spectrum of 20th-century art, from the two-dimensional Cubist innovations in the early years of this century to the experiments with media-based technologies of recent years. A core selection of Modern masterpieces, including works by Marc Chagall, Vasily Kandinsky, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso, are on view in the classically-proportioned galleries of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. European and American art at mid-century, with an emphasis on artists associated with Abstract Expressionism in America and Art Informel in Europe, are represented by the works of such artists as Willem de Kooning, Jean Dubuffet, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. Paintings and sculpture by Antoni Tàpies and Eduardo Chillida, two of Spain's most distinguished 20th-century artists, also are featured in this section. The collection of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao focuses on mid-century works, and the inaugural exhibition places a strong emphasis on the art of the past four decades, including major examples of Pop Art, Minimalism, Arte Povera, and the respective developments of each successive generation. Featured artists include Carl Andre, Joseph Beuys, Gilbert and George, Yves Klein, Roy Lichtenstein, Agnes Martin, Mario Merz, Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman, Claes Oldenburg, and Andy Warhol. The exhibition also highlights contemporary Basque and Spanish art, including the work of Cristina Iglesias, Txomin Badiola, and Juan Munoz. Several galleries at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao are devoted to displaying comprehensive collections of works. This commitment to exhibiting the full range of an artistâs oeuvre correlates with the Guggenheim Foundationâs extraordinary commitment to collecting and exhibiting works by key figures in the development of art of this century, including Beuys, Chagall, Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Piet Mondrian.
