Notes : [ This exhibition addresses the diverse and changing concepts of beauty as expressed by women through photography. It includes more than 90 photographs drawn from the Avon Collection, which is comprised of works by well-known and emerging twentieth-century women photographers. The diverse photographers whose work is included in Eye of the Beholder explore the continuities between selves and fantasies, private and public lives, landscapes and dreamscapes, the beauty of bodies and the beauty of souls. ... Women photographers of many different generations and styles are represented in this exhibition. Included are early twentieth century masters of photography such as Berenice Abbott, Imogen Cunningham and Barbara Morgan; women whose work first became known in the 1970s such as Betty Hahn, Judy Dater and Joyce Neimanas; and postmodernists such as Cindy Sherman, Eileen Cowin, Sarah Charlesworth, Laurie Simmons, Lorna Simpson and Carrie Mae Weems, creating an exhibition that is stylistically diverse. Also included are works by fashion photographers Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Lillian Bassman, and Sarah Moon, and documentary photographers such as Mary Ellen Mark and Phyllis Galembo.
