Notes :

[ Rothko (1903-70) is one of the most central artists in both American abstract expressionism and the whole post-war modernism. The immaterial colour spaces in Rothko's paintings aim for a non-linguistic mystery reminiscent of a religious experience beyond the grasp of the senses. By displaying only one painting, a viewing situation compatible with the ideals of modernism is created: a non-mediated, phenomenal and concentrated meeting of viewer and work of art.
