Notes : [ The Andreas Avery Collection of Aboriginal Art was assembled over three decades by Hogarth Galleries Aboriginal Art Centre on behalf of the Andreas Avery family, and comprises over 350 works. It was started (principally on the initiative of Clive Evatt) in the 1970s, at a time when Aboriginal art was just beginning to attract the serious interest of art museums and collectors. The Hogarth Galleries' far-sighted policy of exhibiting Aboriginal art adjacent to exhibitions of contemporary white Australian art was then highly controversial. Consisting largely of bark paintings from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, the Andreas Avery Collection is now one of the most significant of its kind.
