Australie, Sydney, Museum of Contemporary Art

This exhibition, curated by Bernice Murphy, is the first comprehensive showing of contemporary art from Britain in Australia since 1985. it is the major visual arts component of the newIMAGES initiative: a year-long program of events marking 50 years of the British Council's presence and activities in Australia.
Notes : [ The current British scene has attracted much attention in recent years. Along with the successes of Brit-pop and the revival of the fashion industry, the vitality and urgency of the contemporary art scene has attracted intense international interest. Th exhibition evolved during a number of research trips Bernice Murphy made to Britain over a period of 18 months. By bringing together over 100 works and 48 artists from throughout Britain, it has sought to project a vigorously changing and culturally diverse Britain. Numerous connecting themes can be traced throughout the exhibition. These include competing versions of nation; ruptured relationship to nature; social stratification and contested stories of history/class and popular culture. Among those invited to participate are many young emerging artists, including Louise Hopkins, Permindar Kaur and Richard Billingham. The inclusion of two senior artists - Richard Hamilton and John Latham - is due to the fact that their work has long developed concerns that are now paramount to many of the younger artists. Elsewhere in the exhibition are some of the more recently vaunted names; for example, Damien Hirst, Rachel Whiteread, Vong Phaophanit, Anya Gallaccio and Douglas Gordon (winner of the 1996 UK Turner Prize). Anya Gallaccio has been invited to make a site-specific installation for the lawn in front of the MCA.
