Notes : [ Sculpture, the art of spatiality, and photography, an artistic expression bound to a surface - can they actually be related to each other? This exhibition attempts to disclose the interactions between the two media which have one common feature: the way they deal with light. People realized this when photography was in its infancy, as early as ten years, in fact, after it had "seen the light of day". The first daguerrotypes captured arranged sculptures - unlike humans, they did not move, which was an essential factor in a period in which extremely long exposure times were necessary! Parallel to the early development of this new medium of representation, the Gothic style was rediscovered during the era of historicism: Photographs showing sculptures of medieval cathedrals frequently served as a source of inspiration for sculptors of the time. Pictures of monumental sculptures from Egypt and of those dating back to Roman and Greek times, tucked away in large-format photo albums, suddenly attracted the attention of a new audience regarding their reproduction as a perfect substitute for the "originals". This is evidenced by the plaster casts made at the time for teaching purposes at academies which will be on display at the Palais Liechtenstein together with the photographs.
