A total of eighty objects by twenty-four artists were installed in the Mapplethorpe and Thannhauser Galleries.

Notes : "Rose is a Rrose is a Rrose: Gender Performance in Photography, an exhibition that examines the various ways in which identity is theatrically constructed in photography of this century, will be on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum January 17 through April 27, 1997. A total of eighty objects by twenty-four artists will be installed in the Mapplethorpe and Thannhauser Galleries. The exhibition is organized by Jennifer Blessing, Assistant Curator at the Guggenheim Museum." "The exhibition is divided into two historical sections. The first, which is comprised of objects created in the period between 1920 and 1940, includes the work of Cecil Beaton, Brassai, Claude Cahun, Marcel Duchamp, Hannah Hoech, George Platt Lynes, Man Ray, and Madame Yevonde. The second section, which presents work created after 1968, includes pieces by Janine Antoni, Matthew Barney, Nan Goldin, Lyle Ashton Harris, Juergen Klauke, Robert Mapplethorpe, Christian Marclay, Annette Messager, Pierre Molinier, Yasumasa Morimura, Catherine Opie, Lucas Samaras, Cindy Sherman, Katharina Sieverding, Inez van Lamsweerde, and Andy Warhol." source: http://www.guggenheim.org
