Notes :

[ Although different bodies of work by Hiroshi Sugimoto have been exhibited internationally since the early 1980s, this project is the first U. S. show to examine the breadth of his work. The show introduces the artist's latest and most ambitious project, Hall of Thirty-Three Bays, images of the 1000 twelfth-century gilt wooden Buddhas from the Sanjusangen-do Temple in Kyoto. The show also highlights two other series, Seascapes and Theatres. The Seascapes series capture coastline horizons in a variety of atmospheric conditions and times of day and night all over the world. Although seemingly simple, close examination reveals them to be rich in detail and allusion. Photographs in the Theatres series record the screening of an entire film in an old movie palace; the movie's projected light accumulating over a long exposure to leave only a white, window-like void.
