Exposition. Police Pictures: The Photograph as Evidence
17 octobre 1997 - 20 janvier 1998
USA, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
http://www.sfmoma.org/EXHIB/police.html
"Over 150 photographs from the 19th century to the present that represent the different forms of photography used in police work to identify the criminal and aid in his capture."
Notes : [The goal in displaying these sometimes graphic photographs -- which were not produced as art objects -- is to understand the role of the photograph, seemingly neutral, in transcribing in an authoritative way the "reality"; of people, places, and events.
Although known photographers are represented in this exhibition, including Alexander Gardner, Jacob Riis, Eugene Atget, and Weegee, much of the work is not identifiable by its maker. "Unlike previous exhibitions that focused on the work of one photographer or presented mostly attributed photographs, Police Pictures contains photographs that were usually anonymous and primarily used for investigation, evidence-gathering or scientific categorization," explains Sandra Phillips, curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and organizer of the exhibition. "In some cases written records for the incidents in the pictures were either lost or never created, and thus the photographs' meaning as evidence is unclear. They thus reveal a questionable truth, not an absolute one."
