Notes : [Featuring work from Bay Area artists acquired by SFMOMA over the past five years, this exhibition presents over seventy drawings, paintings, sculptures, and installation works created from the 1950s through the 1990s, including some works that have not yet been displayed at the Museum. The exhibition emphasizes the diversity of Bay Area artists as well as the breadth and depth of work being collected by the Museum. The art of young, emerging artists will be shown along with pieces by more widely recognized Bay Area artists, such as Robert Arneson, Richard Diebenkorn, Manuel Neri, David Park, Wayne Thiebaud, Peter Voulkos, and William T. Wiley. Among the works on view for the first time at SFMOMA is David Cannon Dashiell's "Queer Mysteries" (1993), a series of twenty-eight painted Plexiglas panels with homoerotic imagery and a space-age motif. The panels of "Queer Mysteries," loosely based on the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii, will be hung as a frieze in a single large gallery, each panel joined with the next to echo the effect of the wall paintings of antiquity. Another unique work being presented for the first time at SFMOMA is San Francisco artist Bill Fontana's "Sound Sculpture with a Sequence of Level Crossings" (1982), an eight-channel sound installation featuring train whistles and chugs that pass stereophonically through the gallery space to simulate the "live" experience of passing trains. It is the first of Fontana's sound installations to be acquired by a museum in the United States, purchased in recognition of train enthusiast John R. Lane, SFMOMA director from 1987 through 1997. Significant works recently donated by the Lannan Foundation will also be on view, including "Untitled Standing Figure 1" (1982) by Manuel Neri and "Sorcerer" (1960) by William T. Wiley. Other favorites by well-known Bay Area artists include sculpture by Robert Arneson, "Narkissos" (1976 - 1991) by Jess, and six works by David Park, five of which were recently acquired through a bequest of Lydia Park Moore and Roy Moore. A newly acquired recent painting by Wayne Thiebaud, "Flatland River" (1997), will be joined by a selection of works on paper recently given to the Museum by the artist and his family. In addition to presenting frequently exhibited classics, Art from Around the Bay focuses on work from the 1990s, highlighting younger artists working in Northern California, including Anne Appleby, Enrique Chagoya, Jonathan Hammer, Barry McGee, and Deborah Oropallo, among others. source : http://www.sfmoma.org/EXHIB/aroundthebay.html]
