Exposition: Lyle Ashton HARRIS and Thomas Allen HARRIS: Alchemy
02 mai 1998 - 02 août 1998
USA, Washigton D.C., The Corcoran Gallery of Art
Notes : "A multimedia collaboration between artist/brothers explores the social and spiritual relationship between West African Yoruba culture and contemporary African-American families. Their multi-media installation places these relationships within the larger context of the modern African Diaspora. Timed to coincide with the exhibition, Rhapsodies in Black: Art of the Harlem Renaissance and projected shows from the recently-acquired Evans-Tibbs Collection of African-American art, Alchemy will offer Corcoran audiences a rich and rewarding juxtaposition of historical and contemporary images and ideas, providing a unique opportunity to consider the multi-dimensional development of African-American cultural languages.
Utilizing video, sculpture, and photographic murals, Lyle Ashton Harris and Thomas Allen Harris draw on their fraternal relationship and a mixture of such African cosmologies as Santería, Condemble, Lacuni and Voodoo. In their installation, the Harris brothers reconsider the notion of family, move beyond traditional colonial constructions of race and celebrate the alchemical-transformative potential of African culture in the Americas."
